Eric D. July is the recipient of the ‘Top 20 under 40’ Richard DeVos Young Entrepreneur Award by Northwood University for his outstanding achievements as Founder and Owner of The Rippaverse. This award was part of the 2024 Class of Outstanding Business Leader Awards.
“I’m beyond thankful. Being able to interact with both the students and the accomplished alumni was nothing short of inspiring. I walk away from this event being incredibly optimistic about the future. There are many young people out there with a good head on their shoulders, striving for absolute greatness. Thank you to Northwood U for welcoming me like family. This was an unforgettable experience.” – Eric D July
Originating in 1981, the Northwood University Board of Trustees created the Business Leader Awards to recognize outstanding achievements and those who exemplify the university’s philosophy. Recipients of the awards embody individual freedom and responsibility, moral law, limited government, earned success, and the importance of free enterprise. Honoree criteria also include contributions to the philosophy of private enterprise, support of the integration of the arts with business, economic innovations, community involvement, contribution to education, philanthropic contributions, business success, and spiritual leadership.
Eric launched the Rippaverse in July 2022, along with the first pre-order campaign for his first graphic novel, Isom #1. Prior to this, Eric had made a name and audience for himself as an avid fan of geek culture with a distinct focus on comic books. His YouTube channel hosted a show called For Canon Sake, where he would show off his impressive knowledge of the history of the “Big Two,” Marvel and DC. In recent years, when the films & tv shows ignored this rich history in their adaptations, Eric was hypercritical and stated the importance of being loyal to the source material and respecting the customers. This became the foundation for Rippaverse Comics.
Isom #1 blew past its $100,000 goal, making 1.7 million dollars by July 15th, 2.5 million by July 18th, and 3 million by July 22nd. His next book Isom #2 would make 2.3 million in sales. Eric brought on industry legends Chuck Dixon & Joe Bennet for his third book, Alphacore #1, a crime thriller that follows the super-cops of the Rippaverse. Yaira #1, written by horror darlings the Soska Sisters, is currently in its pre-order campaign. Both campaigns have made well over one million dollars, making the Rippaverse one of North America’s most successful independent comic companies.
This year’s honorees also include senior vice president of automobile sales of American Honda Co, Inc., Mamadou Diallo; CEO of Tri-State Forest Products, Inc., Thomas Latham; chair of Isabela Bank Corporation, Sarah Rowley Opperman; president & CEO of East Penn Manufacturing Co, Chris Pruitt; and chairman of Walbridge Group, Ret. Ambassador John Rakolta Jr.
Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn hosted the honorees at an awards gala on April 6th. Eric D. July attended to accept his award and share his sentiments about receiving this prestigious honor.
